Mussels from Brussels

Our Australia Day was actually confusing, as we chose to relish in the 40 degree heat and toddle off to Belgium for the day...in the Belgian Beer Garden. How unAustralian!! Which brings me to the point of who really celebrates Australia Day?? I remember the bicentennial and all those ships on Sydney Harbour, followed by the "Sydney Special" of fireworks. Yeah, just for something different.....oh let's do fireworks on the harbour! Although once you are actually there for fireworks in Sydney, the dismissive disinterest vastly changes to "ooohs and aaaaah" and squeals as the sky is ablaze with glittering stars and streams of colour. But Australia Day really does not induce excitement, other than to bask in the fact that we get a day off to stand beside a BBQ sweating, drink warm champagne and plop a couple of tired sausages onto wilted bread.
So the alternative of having a pub do all the hardwork was somewhat more appealing. As well as the amusement of seeing our boys competing in a mussel eating challenge. In the first heat, I watched an appallingly unattractive gal hoe down those slug like critters with her pasty fingers and swill the sauce from the bowl as it trickled down her face. She won ofcourse, and staggered off the stage with a toothy grin (probably in search of the nearest bush to regurgitate the rockpool contents she just devoured). She may have won that heat, but I doubt she would have won a boyfriend that day. Dear God it made my stomach churn. I was therefore very proud of the boys for their diligent efforts and somewhat tickled that the more competitive of them, Cameron, fondled his mussels with feminine delicacy...clearly enjoying it more as a free lunch than a competition! Very funny !!!!!!!
